A voice that never climbs

Delayed flight, a rude waiter, a taxi that left without them. His tone stays exactly where it was, a notch under everyone else’s. If there is a problem, he goes quiet and then fixes it.
After years of rooms where the loudest voice wins, it is almost physical, like turning off a fridge you had stopped hearing. You do not realise how tense you were until he says three even sentences to a ticket agent and the line moves.
He looks the same at 7 a.m. as at 7 p.m.

This one takes a while to catch. Early train, late dinner, a Sunday morning with no plans, and he is the same man. Same shave, same calm face, same sleeves. Nobody is performing, which is an enormous relief if you have ever dated someone with a morning version and an evening version.
It is the thing your friends will ask about last and the thing you will tell them about first. Reliability, it turns out, is a look as much as a character trait.
